Gone is the state housing high rise of the 1950s. Nearing completion, is the development of a new purpose-built complex on Greys Ave in Auckland City.

It is one of the projects underway by government agency Kāinga Ora. A transformative step for this form of housing in New Zealand. Due for completion in 2023, three modern buildings are being built. The design caters for the people that will live here, with the aim to enable social connectedness and wellbeing through gardens and shared spaces.

ASECO has been subcontracted by Icon as the main electrical contractor for the project and are providing all the power and lighting for the new complex as well as all the temporary supplies throughout the construction.

Will Green is the Electrical Project Manager for ASECO and says it has been great to be involved.

“It’s a first of its kind for this type of development within the inner city.”

He says the project is progressing well.

“We’re now at the tail-end of the project, ensuring the wiring is complete, all the fittings and fixtures are installed and lighting is powered up.”

In consultation with Scott Electrical, ASECO chose Sitemate® products for all their power needs.

“We assessed three key suppliers for our temporary power requirements. We needed safe, portable power equipment. To cover the three buildings and all our site requirements we needed two power boxes per level and units that could be transported up six or seven flights of stairs. We also introduced 63 Amp boxes halfway up the building to ensure that we had good power coverage.

“What we liked about the Sitemate® temporary power distribution units were their design configuration. The SM17 units have the option to allow 63 Amps in and 63 Amps out, and still have two 32 Amp outlets. The units have the right amount of outlets which really catered well for the structure of the site.

“The bases allowed the units to be at good working height and provided a convenient space to put chargers which was useful.

“We used Sitemate leads for power tools and the likes, as well as welding equipment and the heavier equipment up on the roof.”

As well as meeting the requirements for the site, Sitemate was competitive on price.

“Additionally for such a large scale project it was in the builders’ best interest to get the best possible price.”

Getting the gear on site, at the right time solidified the purchasing decision.

“The service was fantastic. We worked with Sitemate and Scott Electrical to get all the gear together. We were able to stage the delivery of the needs for the site and it came to site pretty seamlessly and the order fulfilled perfectly. A couple of chilli bins for the guys were thrown in there too which was nice.

“It was a fast turnaround from the time we ordered to delivery. And considering there were some pretty big supply chain issues and constraints during that period. Despite these external factors the order got fulfilled very quickly.”
